Revere councilor had the right idea on casinos
May 11, 2006 --
What a refreshing experience: an elected official anticipating and acting imaginatively, aggressively, and creatively!
The proposal of City Councilor George Rotondo to adopt a zoning amendment that would permit a casino in Revere (''Official bidding to attract casino," Globe North, April 30) is exactly the type of message that can help position that city as an attractive location for a casino.
There is no logical reason why Massachusetts does not have casinos -- quality facilities like those in Montreal -- as a part of the menu of activities for residents, tourists, and conventions. In fact, the Lottery Commission should operate them, and one should be in or around Boston and the other in or around Springfield: NOW.
Revere has several locations with potential -- Wonderland, Suffolk Downs, and atop Route 1 next to Weylu's. And with all due respect to [City Council president] Arthur Guinasso, who said a positive message would minimize the city's ability to negotiate, that is exactly the negative, bureaucratic, and regulatory attitude that directs entrepreneurs to other venues. Go, George, Go!
